RESPONSIBILITIES:
Staffs the main circulation desk, including reviewing applications for and issuing library cards, entering library card application information into the computerized database, checking books and other library materials in and out, collecting fines, inspecting returned books/materials for damage, and answering questions from library patrons about library policies, programs/services, and book locations; explains the operation of the Library's computerized catalog system to patrons. Assists in processing books and materials for placing into general circulation.
Assists in processing incoming books and materials for placing into general circulation, including data entry of items into the catalog, placing labels, bar codes and other identification in appropriate locations on books/materials received for processing; checks out items to mending; repairs items if needed; uses equipment to clean discs; searches library shelves for books and other materials on hold for patrons.
Assists the Children's Librarian in planning, preparing and performing story times for children in English and Spanish. Helps plan and prepare activities and events for children.
Helps plan and prepare programming throughout the library. Helps and participates in events as needed.
Provides reference and reader's advisor services, instructs patrons in the use of library resources, including databases, reference materials, catalogs, computer, and the interlibrary loan system.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND CHARACTERISTICS:
Knowledge of the general operating policies and procedures of the Logan Library.
Knowledge of library circulation principles and practices for the Logan Library.
Knowledge of library cataloging systems, both manual and electronic.
Knowledge of the operation of computerized library management systems used by the Logan Library.
Knowledge of child development.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other staff and the public.
Skill in understanding and following complex procedures and guidelines.
QUALIFICATIONS:
High School GED or equivalent AND experience equivalent to one (1) year full-time clerical/office support work, including some computerized information systems. Experience with children ages 0-11. Spanish speaking preferred but not required.
