Under general supervision, drives and operates emergency medical response and fire suppression apparatus/equipment, including Pump Trucks and aerial platforms.
Testing will be held on Friday, October 5, 2018 and Saturday, October 6, 2018.
QUALIFICATIONS:
THIS POSITION IS AN IN-HOUSE ONLY JOB POSTING. YOU MUST CURRENTLY BE EMPLOYED BY THE CITY OF LOGAN TO APPLY FOR THIS POSITION AND YOU MUST HAVE BEEN EMPLOYED BY THE LOGAN FIRE DEPARTMENT FOR A MINIMUM OF TWO (2) YEARS OF SERVICE TO BE ELIGIBLE TO TEST AND THOSE WHO HAVE OR WILL HAVE FOUR (4) YEARS OR MORE OF SERVICE DURING THE LIFE OF THE TEST ARE ELIGIBLE TO PROMOTE.
High School GED or equivalent AND Apparatus Driver Operator (ADO) certification, Utah Commercial Drivers License (CDL), Firefighter II certification, EMT Intermediate Certification. Must have been employed by the Logan Fire Department for a minimum of two (2) years. Candidate may test in four (4) years with a Fire Science or Paramedic Degree. Candidate for this position must pass a competitive examination in accordance with Civil Service Rules and Regulations and shall have a history of positive performance evaluations. Desirable qualifications/certificates include Fire Officer I, Fire Instructor I, HAZ-Mat awareness, or Bachelor Degree in Fire Science or related area. Any equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered as qualifications for this position. Must annually pass the Wildland Pack Test as a condition of continuing employment.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Drives emergency medical response vehicle and/or fire fighting apparatus to alarm scene; operates a full range of fire suppression/emergency response apparatus and equipment at the scene, including regulating water pressure through hose lines of various sizes; maintains assigned apparatus/equipment/vehicle, including identifying maintenance and repairs needed, performing minor/routine maintenance and repairs, and/or requesting major repairs be performed.
Performs a variety of fire suppression activities at the fire scene, including laying and connecting hose, holding nozzles and directing water streams, raising and climbing ladders, and utilizing a variety of equipment, including pike poles, smoke ejectors, and forcible entry tools; operates a variety of fire suppression and/or emergency assistance equipment; participates in a variety of training activities to maintain/improve the level of fire suppression/emergency medical skills and physical conditioning.
Performs a variety of emergency rescue activities at fire, accident, or other emergency scenes; administers first aid, at the Emergency Medical Technician level, at fire, accident, and other emergency/rescue scenes; performs a variety of cleaning, maintenance, and minor repair tasks necessary to keep the fire station and related equipment clean, stored properly, and fully functional; answers phone and operates radio to facilitate effective and timely response to emergency calls.
Performs fire safety inspections of businesses, manufacturing/industrial facilities, schools, and other commercial/public facilities to identify fire hazards, potential/actual fire code violations, and to verify locations of hazardous materials; talks with school groups and other City residents to explain fire safety/fire prevention practices and techniques and inform them about the functions of the Logan Fire Department; conducts classes on C.P.R., fire prevention, fire safety, and other fire and medical related topics.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND CHARACTERISTICS:
Knowledge of fire suppression principles, methods, techniques, and practices.
Knowledge of operating techniques, purpose, and use of various tools, equipment, vehicles, and apparatus used in fire suppression, rescue, and medical assistance operations.
Knowledge of first aid, C.P.R., and other basic emergency medical assistance techniques.
Knowledge of the City of Logan fire safety codes and ordinances.
Knowledge of the street names and locations in the City of Logan and Cache County.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with business owners/managers, other staff, and the public.
Skill in following complex oral and written instructions, procedures, and guidelines.
Skill in communicating using standard telephone and two-way radio equipment.
Skill in safely and effectively operating a full range of fire suppression/emergency response, apparatus and equipment.
Skill in applying basic emergency medical assistance techniques, including first aid and C.P.R.
