Under general supervision, performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled, electrical work to assist Electric Line Workers in the installation, maintenance, and repair of energized/de-energized high voltage overhead and underground transmission, distribution, and service lines.
Series Standards
Positions allocated to this classification are usually responsible to a designated Electric Line Worker or Electric Line Crew Foreman and perform assigned tasks of a comprehensive nature designed to acquaint and teach Apprentice Line Workers essential journey-level electric line worker skills. Work is distinguished from that of the Electric Line Worker classification by its lower skill and assignment level and lack of overall responsibilities.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists Electric Line Worker in the construction, repair, and maintenance of overhead and underground power transmission and distribution lines. Operates line trucks, line working apparatus and heavy equipment. Refuses distribution lines, sets poles, installs cross arms, strings and ties in new lines and makes up jumpers and assists Line Workers in energizing lines. Prepares material and equipment for fieldwork. Installs and connects transformers, both three-phase and single phase. Digs trenches and lays conduit systems for underground lines.
Assists in responding to emergency calls. Makes connects and disconnects for customers and informs public of pending outages due to repairs. Repairs street lights, trims trees and other debris from lines and loops, explains problems to public and requests cooperation during repair work. Performs other duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND CHARACTERISTICS:
Knowledge of basic overhead and underground electrical power systems.
Knowledge of basic math skills to perform electrical calculation.
Basic knowledge of the practices and techniques of electric utility overhead/underground transmission, distribution, and service line installation, maintenance, and repair.
Knowledge of the established safety standards and industry guidelines/regulations for the tools, equipment, and materials used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of overhead/underground transmission, distribution, and service lines and associated equipment.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with contractors, engineers, other City employees/officials, and the public.
Skill in performing apprentice or entry-level installation, maintenance, and repair work on high voltage overhead/underground transmission, distribution, and service lines.
Skill in operating a variety of tools and equipment used for the installation, maintenance, and repair of energized/de-energized overhead/underground transmission, distribution, and service lines.
Must be able to perform the essential physical requirements of the job.
Ability to work at various heights and in adverse weather.
Must be able to carry out general verbal and written instructions.
QUALIFICATIONS:
High school graduate AND two (2) years experience as a skilled Ground Man or equivalent training OR graduation from an approved Line Worker Training program. Must possess a Utah Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at a level appropriate to the equipment operated.
Career Requirements
Comply with State of Utah Apprentice Lineman skills standards for Electric Line Workers while maintaining the required skills and performance levels appropriate to the current level of apprenticeship.
