Home Government Mayor's Office Elections Council Candidates Paul R. Borup
Paul was born in Logan and earned a degree in Economics from Utah State University. He was awarded a fellowship to study at the University of South Carolina and graduated with a MBA (finance emphasis). Paul met his wife Beth at Utah State (they are True Aggies) and they have two children.
He has worked in the insurance industry since graduating from Utah State and held many distinct roles including regional financial officer overseeing 9 western states, president of a regional independent brokerage, and product manager for a nationwide hospitality risk management program. He currently manages the commercial insurance operations in Utah for one of the largest insurance companies in the United States. Paul’s career has taken him all over the country and he and his family have lived in Utah, Idaho, Colorado, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia.
Paul has been actively involved in community service. He was named Distinguished Under 40 by the Idaho Falls Chamber of Commerce and served on the Idaho Falls Downtown Rotary Club Board of Directors. He was active in the Lions Club and invited to serve on the community advisory board of RBC Bank in Lumberton, North Carolina. He earned his Eagle Scout and has volunteered in many capacities with the Boy Scouts over the years.
Seeing so many different cities and towns and experiencing the consequences of both good and bad decisions by local governments prompted Paul’s interest in running for city council. Logan is a special place with a unique heritage that should be preserved while addressing the challenges that come from inevitable growth. His platform focuses on 5 main ideas:
- Neighborhoods Count – No one knows a neighborhood better than the people who live there and their voices should be heard.
- Safe Streets – The interests of pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists should be balanced and forward-looking plans need to be in place to ensure smooth travel throughout the city.
- High Tax Loads create High City Spending – We need to work diligently to ensure we don’t spend money unnecessarily while appropriately funding infrastructure and essential services.
- Long Term, Sustainable Housing Policy – Logan needs a wide range of affordable, but also acceptable, housing for all its citizens (and their cars, parking shouldn’t be overlooked)
- City Council Service is a Privilege – The City Council serves the public and should always be transparent, accessible, and not beholden to special interests.
