The Center for Persons with Disabilities at Utah State University is excited to be in partnership with Logan Parks and Recreation Department to offer an expanded program to help facilitate greater inclusion of children of all abilities into Logan Parks and Recreation Department activities.
The Center for Persons with Disabilities has received a grant to fund this expanded program. We feel that children with disabilities should have the opportunity to participate in activities with those who don’t have disabilities. This grant will provide the following services:
The grant will provide volunteer staff to assist with children’s special needs. We will have a pool of volunteers from many organizations trained in working with children with disabilities in various activity settings. These volunteers will be trained, a background check will be completed and they will consult directly with the child’s parent about any pertinent behavioral, medical or other concern the parent may have. Please ask Logan Parks and Recreation Department staff to identify your child as one who may need additional assistance when turning in your application for the activity your child will participate in. That way, we will be able to provide appropriate volunteer supervision for your child.
Secondly, this grant will provide special training for Logan Parks and Recreation Department employees, coaches, and volunteers who will be working with your child. This training will be provided by qualified professionals from the Center for Persons with Disabilities and is offered to ensure that your child will have a safe, fun experience.
Thirdly, this grant project will promote wider use of the Logan Parks and Recreation Department activities by children with disabilities. We have surveyed children in the school districts and have attempted to publicize our project. We hope that this effort will encourage more children with special needs to participate.
As part of this project, we feel that there will be benefits beyond facilitating children with disabilities within the Logan Parks and Recreation Department activities. We anticipate children of all abilities creating friendships that will last not only during the span of the activity, but into the school and other extra curricular activities. We also hope to benefit the parents of children with special needs by allowing the parents to sit and watch their child participate in an activity without having to worry about safety, focus on the activity or assisting their child during the activity. Our volunteer staff will be there to help with that part of the activity.
We sincerely hope that if you have a child with a disability, you will consider not only enrolling him/her in Logan Parks and Recreation Department activities but will use the resources within this grant to make his/her experience, as well as your own more enjoyable.
