DeWitt Springs Project

Background
Logan Canyon National Scenic Byway along US-89 runs from the mouth of Logan Canyon just east of Logan City to Garden City in Rich County.  The scenery makes the drive along US-89 enjoyable regardless of the season; the fiery foilage during fall being especially beautiful.  Some of the activities in the canyon include rock climbing, skiing, fishing, hiking, camping, and snowmobiling.  It is a place enjoyed by many visitors.

Water Line Replacement
On May 27, 2008, Logan City started the replacement of a critical waterline paralleling US-89 several miles near the west mouth of Logan Canyon. Construction of this pipeline is expected to be completed by May 15, 2009. Over the last four years, we have performed extensive environmental and engineering studies and design to replace this line.

Our existing steel water main, which was constructed in the late 1940’s, is failing and leaking in excess of 1600 gallons per minute. Over the last four years losses in this line have been increasing at a rate of an additional 200 gallons per minute each year. As the condition of the water main progressively deteriorates, the risks to US-89 and a major water supply to Logan City increase dramatically. US-89 is a lifeline to many communities, including all of Rich County and part of Southern Idaho .  Recognizing the need to protect the highway with the need to provide a high quality reliable water supply to our residents, emergency facilities, and industry, Logan City has initiated the construction phase of this project.

Travel Planning
Unfortunately, for the next three and a half months, this project will affect travel through Logan Canyon and along US-89. Our contractor, Whitaker Construction, is making every effort to minimize the impacts through this area. To minimize time in the US-89 right-of-way they plan to work 12-16 and occasionally 24 hour days while using some alternate methods to avoid traffic interruption. All this is being done in close coordination with the Utah Department of Transportation and the U.S. Forest Service. The schedule associated with this web site will be updated weekly to help assist you in planning your travel. Please be patient and work with us. We are working very hard to minimize the impacts on your experience in Logan Canyon .

Alternate Routes
With the expectation of some delays, some possible alternate routes have been provided.  The recommended alternative route is the northern route that passes through Preston, Strawberry Canyon, Paris, and back down to Garden City.  The southern route may be preferred to those whose point of origin lies farther south along the Wasatch Front.  Traffic should never be delayed such that the alternate routes will be quicker than US-89.  If there are any changes or road closures they will be known ahead of time and posted on this site.

RIVER TRAIL

The River Trail will be closed for a short time during the month of August due to the construction. These closures are as follows:

August 11-15: Trail Closed from Red Bridge to 2nd Dam.

August 25-30: Trail Closed from trailhead to 2nd Dam.

For your safety, please obey all posted closures. If access upstream from the closed location is desired, please drive to 2nd Dam. Pedestrian access through the construction zone on the highway is NOT permitted. We apologize for the inconvenience.

BONNEVILLE SHORELINE TRAIL

Parts of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail (BST) between the Logan River and Green Canyon will be closed due to the construction. These parts are as follows:

August 18-January 31, 2009: Trail Closed from Trailhead at 1st Dam to Northern end of Logan Golf and Country Club.

For your safety, please obey all posted closures.
