Understanding EMS in Logan City and Cache County

Cache County is a pretty unique area. We are surrounded by mountains which isolates us from the hustle and bustle of the "outside" world but which also creates some unique challenges when it comes to emergency services. In areas such as Salt Lake or Ogden when there is a major emergency, many outside agencies can be called to assist. In Cache Valley, additional fire apparatus may be called from surrounding departments via mutual aid agreements to assist on a fire scene. Ambulances respond from one of two stations in Logan, the Smithfield fire station, or the Hyrum fire station. When these major emergencies happen emergency service providers have to be able to cover the calls and still provide enough manpower to cover any additional calls that might come in. In Logan we do this in a number of ways.

First we send a staffed engine to medical calls within the boundaries of Logan and to cities for which Logan Fire Department provides service. It may seem strange to send a fire engine to a medical scene but this allows personnel to help with manpower while still remaining available to take fire calls. All Logan Fire personnel are cross trained to respond to both fire and medical emergencies. If a fire were to be called out while the engine is on a medical scene they wouldn't have to return to the station to get their equipment.

Second we use a callback system where four designated firefighters carry pagers at all times during a given day. They are paged to return to the station when the staffing at the station falls below a certain level. This saves the cost of having firefighters on staff all the time but ensures that personnel are on hand for high call volume periods.

Third we are now able to pull in ambulances from either Hyrum or Smithfield in the case that multiple calls are out and medical coverage is no longer available in Logan. Logan ambulances are also available to cover calls in Hyrum, Smithfield and the areas that those ambulances cover. This system offers great redundancy while disseminating resources for effective coverage. All ambulances are owned and operated by CCEMS (Cache County Emergency Medical Services), a joining of Cache County medical resources into one entity.

Patients are transported to one of two hospitals, Logan Regional Hospital or Cache Valley Specialty Hospital.

Logan Fire Department is staffed with Paramedics so that they can provide ALS to both Logan and County residence. This system has been in place for some time and has been very effective. The need for growth outside of Logan has increased as the population of Cache Valley has grown. Logan Fire Department and Cache County officials are pleased to work together to offer one of the premier EMS services in the state.
