Tips to SAVE you money

  • Set your AC thermostat to 78 degrees. You can save up to 3 % on cooling costs for every degree you raise your thermostat.
  • Keep shrubs away from air conditioning units. It blocks vents and reduces the unit’s ability to exhaust air.
  • Check your air conditioners filter, once a month.
  • Use fans to improve air circulation, allowing you to raise the temperature on your thermostat and still feel comfortable.
  • Drapes, shades, and awnings shield windows from the hot sun.
  • Make sure your blinds and shades are closed in the morning.
  • Do your laundry and dishwashing in the early morning or late evening.
  • Adjust your dishwasher so dishes dry without heat.
  • Install compact fluorescent lights. They use less energy and produce less heat to provide the same amount of light.
  • Microwave or use your outdoor grill instead of using the range or oven.

Logan City’s energy use increases by 25% during the summer months.

The price of this extra summer energy costs TWICE as much.

Here are five effective ways to conserve energy with a simple push, pull, or turn of a switch.

When not in active use, turn off lights, stereos, televisions, computers, and other appliances.

Set your summertime air conditioning thermostat no lower than 78 degrees. Each degree setting above 72 degrees reduces, by three percent, the amount of energy used by your central air conditioner. Set the thermostat even higher, or turn it off, when you leave the house for more than three hours.

Are you running an old refrigerator or freezer? An old, inefficient model can cost up to $150 per year to operate, sometimes costing more than the value of the food inside.

Dust and dirt can reduce the efficiency of some appliances, causing them to work harder and run longer than they should. Make sure furnace or air conditioner filters are cleaned or replaced as necessary. Refrigerator and freezer coils should be cleaned annually.

Draperies or blinds should be closed on windows facing the sun. Make sure all windows and doors are shut tight while your air conditioner is running. Turn off the air conditioner in the evening and open windows to take advantage of cool night air.

To meet peak demands, especially during summer months, Logan Light & Power has to purchase power from expensive outside sources. Decreasing overall energy use and by shifting usage to off-peak times (before 10 AM & after 8 PM), will help reduce our reliance on these expensive sources of energy.

Easy, low cost choices you can make to save energy and money.

  • Watch 1 less hour of TV per day.
  • Microwave instead of using the range or oven two nights a week.
  • Barbecue two nights a week.
  • Reset the temperature on electric water heater to 120 degrees or less.
  • Run washer only when full, and use a clothesline to dry clothes.
  • Turn off your computer when not in use.
  • Discontinue heating a hot tub if not regularly used.
  • Let dishes air-dry in dishwasher.
  • Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents.
  • Caulk & weather-strip doors and windows. Add insulation.
  • Replace an older refrigerator.
  • Replace single pane windows with double pane windows.
  • Purchase energy efficient products especially those carrying the Energy-Star label.
