Please keep recycle lids down and No Glass!
The Environmental Department would like to remind residents that as the snow season begins, please remember to keep the lids down on your blue recycling containers. Wet materials cannot always be recycled because of damage to the materials. Please also remember that glass is not accepted in the household recycling program. Glass creates contamination to other recyclable items and can become a safety hazard for the sorting process. Our recycling program has had great success and we have received less than 10% contamination problems, which is much lower than other communities. Contamination happens when people mix garbage in their recycling containers or liquids that can ruin the recyclable materials. For a list of glass recycling drop-sites or for questions or concerns, please call the Environmental Department at 716-9755.

Dr. Garbology says Recycle, because it:

Saves Energy
First of all, recycling saves energy because producing products from recycled materials consumes much less energy than from virgin raw materials. This can significantly reduce the consumption of energy from nonrenewable fossil fuels such as coal, imported oil and natural gas and significantly reduce the environmental emissions from energy production, including greenhouse gasses and mercury.
Limits Environmental Impacts
Recycling also avoids the adverse environmental impact of mining, harvesting and processing virgin raw materials, including the impacts of deforestation, soil erosion, habitat destruction and the adverse effects on water and air resources" (SWANA Newsletter pg 15).
Extends Landfill Life
Thirdly, recycling will extend the life of our landfill. The landfill located in Logan City is scheduled to close by 2022 at present rates of garbage disposal. We would prefer using our present landfill as long as possible in contrast to the expensive option of securing land that may currently be farmland and constructing a new landfill. Landfills are expensive because of the liners used, leachate management systems, gas management systems and ground water monitoring.
Our goal in Cache County is to reduce waste going in to the landfill by 50% by the year 2010. Dr. Garbology chairperson for the Recycling Task Force Operations Unit says this can be accomplished through our commercial, and residential recycling programs, as well as proper disposal of construction and demolition debris. This ambitious goal will take wise planning by officials and dedication by concerned citizens and businesses. "As of the 2003 Annual Report we are diverting 37%," says Garbology. "Everyone involved is just a piece of the puzzle."
