The Logan City Civil Service Commission hereby announces the recruitment of eligible applicants for the purpose of establishing a hiring roster with the Logan City Fire Department for the position of Firefighter Paramedic. This position would afford the candidate of choice an opportunity to increase their knowledge and experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:

Performing a variety of fire suppression activities at the fire scene, including laying and connecting hose, holding nozzles and directing water streams, raising and climbing ladders, and utilizing a variety of equipment, including pike poles, smoke ejectors, and forcible entry tools.

Operating fire suppression and/or emergency assistance equipment.

Performing emergency rescue activities at fire, accident, or other emergency scenes.

Managing activities at accidents or other emergency scenes.

Administering emergency medical care at fire, accident, and other emergency rescue scenes.

Performing fire safety inspections of businesses, manufacturing/industrial facilities, schools, and other commercial/public facilities to identify fire hazards, potential/actual fire code violations, and to verify locations of hazardous materials.

Talking with school groups and other City residents to explain fire safety/fire prevention practices and techniques and inform them about the functions of the Logan City Fire Department.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND CHARACTERISTICS:
General knowledge and familiarity with Logan City and the Logan City Fire Department.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with organization staff, other City staff, and the public.
Skill in producing accurate, thorough, and neat written reports.
Ability to maintain and handle confidential information.
Ability to work under pressure and be multi-task oriented.
Punctual, reliable, and maintains a proper and professional appearance.

Prior Fire and EMS experience preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS:
The City is looking for candidates with the following education, training, and experience:

AT THE TIME OF EXAMINATION

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must be a high school graduate or have GED equivalency.
  • Must not have been convicted of any felony, or misdemeanor involving moral turpitude.
  • Must be able-bodied and capable of speaking and writing the English language.
  • Must be a citizen of United States or be eligible to work within the United States.
  • Must pass a pre-employment background and reference check, and a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Must be currently certified as a Utah Emergency Medical Paramedic or a National Registry Paramedic. (Eligible to apply and test if enrolled in a current Paramedic Program but will not be hired as a Paramedic until certifications are obtained. A letter from the school/agency confirming enrollment is required.)
  • Must be currently certified as a Firefighter I and II, Haz Mat Awareness and Operations by the Utah Fire and Rescue Academy or any International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) accredited agency. (Currently certified Paramedics can apply and test without current Firefighter Certifications.)
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

Desirable qualifications and certifications include Haz-Mat Technician, Technical Rescue Certificate, Associates or Bachelor’s degree, and Wildland Red Card.

COMPENSATION
All City employees are paid within a salary range based on a statewide market study. Annual merit increases are based upon personal performance on goals established by the employees, immediate supervisor, and Human Resource Department, as funds are appropriated by the Municipal Council.

EXAMINATION:
The recruit examination process will be divided into four phases over a two-day period, scheduled for Thursday, May 28, 2020 & Friday, May 29, 2020.

A physical agility test using nationally recognized job skills will be given to all applicants. This exam will be a timed activity. Any applicant who does not complete the physical fitness exam in the allotted time will not be eligible to continue in the testing process.

A 2-3-hour video-based exam will be given to all applicants who pass the physical fitness portion of the exam. This section of the recruitment process will be rated to a maximum of 40% of the composite score.

A practical exam based upon current Utah EMS Protocols will be given to all applicants who pass the physical fitness portion of the exam. This section of the recruitment process will be rated to a maximum of 20% of the composite score.

An Oral Exam will be given to all applicants who pass the physical fitness portion of the exam. This section of the recruitment process will be rated to a maximum of 20% of the composite score.

Applicants will be given additional points based on a pre-determined list of qualifications relating to education and experience. This section of the recruitment process will be rated to a maximum of 20% of the composite score.

Candidates are responsible to ensure that all information is provided to the City for assessment. Copies of certifications and diplomas are required in order to receive credit; please attach copies to the application. Credit will not be given without proof or verification. If certifications are pending, please provide a letter of verification that the certification is pending.
